OAI Biospecimen Resources
In this video, we will discuss the
available biopecimens within the
osteoarthritis initiative.
As a reminder, the osteoarthritis
initiative is a cohort of almost 4,800
well-characterized participants that
have publicly available resources in
three repositories that create rich and
linkable data sets.
The first repository is the NIMH data
archive or NDA OAI website. This is
where you can go to download clinical
data, the images or data from nested
studies such as the biomarkers.
Data from the genomewide association
study is available through the dbcap.
And finally there is a biopecimen
repository form which will be the focus
of today's webinar to discuss how to
request those biopecimen.
Serum plasma and urine were typically
collected at every in-person visit with
also buffy citrate or buffy EDTA
available at most visits. Other
biopecimens are also available at
selected visits.
The OAI had a robust procedure for
collecting biopecimen, processing the
biopecimen and shipping and storing the
biopecimens.
All this documentation is available on
the NDA OAI website.
Serum, plasma and urine were frozen
within 15 minutes of collection, stored
at 70° C, and free stall cycles were
recorded.
To receive biopecimen, first you must
complete the OAI biopecimen request
form, which you can access through the
QR code at the bottom of the screen.
Applicants must provide a list of
requested OIDs
and provide one or two alternate samples
in case of insufficient volume remaining
for one of your participants.
You can then submit the package which is
accepted on a rolling basis.
The review can take six to 10 weeks to
complete and applicants may recent
submit to respond to reviewer comments.
Please note that it is the requesting
PI's responsibility for any cost
associated with retrieving and shipping
the biopecimen.
The applications are reviewed by the
biopecimen review and allocation
committee or Back. They examine four key
aspects. study feasibility, scientific
merit, consistency with the objectives
and goals of the OAI and priority is
given to those proposing longitudinal
measurements. You can access additional
review criteria using the QR code on
screen.
After approval, the requested specimens
will be set aside for the requesting PI.
They will not be released until proof of
funding is received. The PI will then
receive the samples in a blinded manner
and the investigator must submit the
data for unblinding.
The UAI core knowledge base can help you
prepare your biopecimen request form and
help you with creating the list of IDs
for your study. In the near future, we
hope that we will be able to provide an
inventory of which biopecimens and how
much volume are available for each
participant at each visit.
Thank you for your time and if you have
